A tradesman in Istanbul was defrauded of 2 million Turkish Lira, equivalent to about $240,000, after falling victim to a phone scam. The 48-year-old man, identified only as F.Ç., received a call from individuals posing as bank officials who claimed they needed the password sent to his phone to fix an error in his accounts. Caught up in the moment and overwhelmed with work, F.Ç. gave out the password without much thought. Later, he discovered that his bank account had been drained of all his money.
He quickly reported the incident to the police, who subsequently launched an investigation. According to police reports, the fraudsters transferred the stolen money to various other accounts. During the course of the investigation, authorities were able to identify six suspects who were believed to be behind the scam. Working with the Fraud Bureau, the police arrested the six suspects after completing their questioning. The suspects denied any wrongdoing, but the evidence suggested otherwise. They were eventually charged and sent to prison.
