"Deadly Clashes in Sudan Claim 83 Lives"

At least 83 killed and 1,126 injured in clashes in Sudan
Violent clashes between the army and the HDK paramilitary group in Sudan have resulted in at least 83 deaths and 1,126 injuries since April 15, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The conflict has mainly affected Khartoum as well as areas including South Kurdufan, North Darfur, and the Northern states. As a result of the fighting, patients and healthcare workers are finding it hard to access hospitals, and supplies of certain medicines and medical equipment are running low. WHO has called on both sides to guarantee unrestricted access to healthcare facilities, and to respect impartiality in delivering healthcare services to those injured in the conflict. The WHO also reminded both sides that they are obligated under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, the wounded, healthcare workers, and ambulances, as well as healthcare facilities. Initially triggered by a disagreement over military security reform, the conflict between the HDK and the army has escalated in recent months.
