Fidesz MP advocates for protection of Hungarian rights in Ukraine at Council of Europe

Hungarian MP, Barna Pál Zsigmond, has sent a letter to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, outlining concerns over the increased deprivation of rights of Hungarians in Ukraine. Zsigmond references that Ukraine has denied fundamental rights of national minorities, such as the right to use their mother tongue and the right to education in their mother tongue, which has been ongoing since 2014. Zsigmond called on the Council of Europe to take possible steps to ensure minorities in Ukraine are not disadvantaged. Pejčinović Burić responded and stated the Council of Europe is closely monitoring the situation and hopes that Ukraine will act in accordance with the Venice Commission’s expected guidance on the issue in June.
