Fighting Disinformation: An International Effort, Says Fahrettin Altun

Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun of Turkey addressed a panel on "Disaster Diplomacy: Rebuilding International Solidarity for a Resilient World" in Washington, DC, to highlight the unprecedented state-nation solidarity demonstrated during the recent earthquakes in the country. Altun noted that Turkey experienced two devastating earthquakes in a short period, which heavily affected over 14 million citizens living in a vast area. He expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives and their loved ones. Altun emphasized the urgency of international solidarity in the face of global crises and disasters, stating that these problems are no longer regional but have the potential to become global issues. Hence, he called for international cooperation in tackling such challenges. Altun also drew attention to the destructive impact of disinformation and fake news, which can further impede crisis communication efforts. Finally, he expressed appreciation and gratitude for the significant support extended from international organizations and other countries, particularly the United States. He concluded by stating that Turkey would mobilize its resources to ensure that all the wounds caused by the earthquakes would heal, and every destroyed house and building would be rebuilt with greater strength than before.
