This marks Lavrov’s first official trip to Latin America since 2020, before the Russia-Ukraine war began. The visit is a sign of Russia's interest in deepening its ties with the Latin American region, which is also home to various other Russian allies like Cuba and Venezuela.
The Russian Foreign Ministry hopes that Lavrov's visit will help promote closer ties and provide an opportunity to explore new avenues of cooperation between Russia and its Latin American partners. While the visit is expected to focus on a range of issues, the strengthening of trade and investment cooperation is likely to be high on the agenda, especially given the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
