Uzbek man caught smuggling over 3 kg of gold from India
A Uzbekistani citizen has been detained at the Delhi Airport for attempting to smuggle more than 3 kg of gold out of the country. The man left a bag of gold worth more than $200,000 at the airport, fearing arrest, and tried to fly to Dubai from Chandigarh Airport instead. However, he was caught and returned to Delhi. Customs officials reported that the man had concealed 15 gold chains and 17 semi-spherical gold items weighing a total of 3,208 grams inside a luggage trolley. The recovered gold has been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act and the accused passenger has been placed under arrest. Smuggling of gold is a common problem in India, where high import taxes on the precious metal have led to a thriving black market. Customs officials are vigilant and take strict action against individuals caught trying to smuggle gold out of the country.
